Sun Shines as New School Mascot

The T'siya Day School students recently participated in a school-wide vote to select a new mascot that would embody their collective identity. After careful consideration and an enthusiastic campaign period, the student body has spoken, and the sun has emerged as the chosen symbol to represent the vibrant spirit of T'siya Day School.

The decision to introduce a new school mascot aimed to foster school pride and unity, providing an opportunity for students to actively participate in shaping their school's identity.

Two options, the roadrunner and the sun, were put forth for consideration. As the ballots were counted, it became evident that the sun had resonated deeply with the student body, emerging as the clear winner. The sun, with its warmth, brightness, and life-giving energy, was chosen for its powerful symbolism. 

The Zia sun symbol is one of the world’s oldest and most famous sun symbols, and it stands out as the centerpiece of the New Mexico State flag. Not only does the Zia sun symbolize the blazing life-giving energy source for the entire planet, but it also includes the Zia people’s reverence for the number 4. The Zia sun symbol’s sixteen rays represent:

• Four seasons of the year (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter)
• Four cardinal directions (North, South, East, West)
• Four periods of the day (Morning, Noon, Evening, Night)
• Four seasons of life (Childhood, Youth, Middle Years, Old Age)

T’siya Day School students represent the Zia Pueblo community’s bright future, and the Zia sun is the Zia people’s most important symbol. It makes sense that the Suns were voted as the T’siya Day School’s mascot. Our Suns are being filled with the life-sustaining power of knowledge and culture which inspires them to shine brighter and rise earlier every morning.

With the sun as the new mascot, T'siya Day School has embarked on an exciting rebranding journey. The radiant logo, featuring a stylized sun, will now grace school banners, merchandise, uniforms, and digital platforms. The redesigned imagery is set to inspire students, igniting a sense of unity, passion, and pride in all school-related activities.

As the sun rises on a new era for T'siya Day School, students are looking forward to embracing their radiant mascot and allowing its warmth to shine through their accomplishments, both inside and outside the classroom. With the sun as their guiding light, the T'siya Day School community is poised to continue their journey towards excellence, unity, and a bright future.
